Israel moves to bar travellers from Kenya over Ebola
Israel has moved to bar travellers from five East and Central African countries over the regional Ebola outbreak: the DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. A directive dated June 10, 2026 directs airlines to deny boarding to anyone who has been in the listed countries during the prior 21 days. The notable name on that list is Kenya, which has not confirmed a single case.
The restriction first surfaced as a Health Ministry recommendation before the operative notice to airlines; independent confirmation of enforcement at departure gates was not yet available at the time of writing.
The restriction sorts countries by proximity to the outbreak rather than by infection. Kenya's inclusion is the clearest example: no cases, but close ties to the epicentre and a major transit hub, so it gets swept in.
Uganda, which has recorded confirmed cases and deaths, has pushed back hard, with its health ministry calling the bans unfair and disproportionate to the real risk. The deeper friction is older than this outbreak. The WHO has repeatedly cautioned that sweeping travel bans tend to drive people toward informal, unmonitored border crossings, which weakens surveillance and contact tracing rather than strengthening it.
This puts a price on transparency. Uganda reported its outbreak openly and cooperated with international partners, and is being restricted anyway. The lesson a watching government might draw is that early, honest reporting brings economic and diplomatic penalties regardless of how well you contain the disease.
Over time that erodes the single thing outbreak control depends on most: the willingness to raise the alarm early.
